Designing a website for Worthy: A circus with a cause
Worthy is a circus event with all of the profits going to the American
Foundation for Suicide Prevention. In the past three years they have
raised over $50,000. No performer is ever alone on stage, to represent
how we are never truly alone in life. Worthy, at the time I did this, was
in year four of production. They have now just wrapped up year five. My
goal for the website was to create a spot with all the information to
take the burden off the staff. I included audition information, sponsor
information and a spot to buy tickets.
Sketching it out
I started by drawing some basic layouts that were simple. I tried to
keep it as minimal as possible to make it easy to navigate.
Creating a wireframe:
I followed the sketched-out designs closely at the beginning with a few
minor changes to make sure the layout was a good fit. I had a few peer
reviews and I got minimal feedback on things to change. This was a
little strange to me, but I went with it.
Putting together a mood board:
I pick the fonts from ones they used in previous advertisements for the
show. I also pulled colors from the previous marketing materials. I
created a new logo and new aerialist graphics. To keep in theme with no
performer being on stage alone, I made sure I created graphics with two
aerialists.
Let the show begin!
The final design included images from previous shows, hand-drawn
graphics and a new customer made logo featuring two of their Ogden
center instructors. I loved creating this. I feel like it turned out
well and fits the brand.
